Sebastian Palmer: Hope: Portraits of Resilience in São Paulo
1. Edvaldo. Edvaldo works as a cook 7 days a week. Last year he won a competition to train as a chef in Europe but was disqualified when it was discovered he didn’t have a high enough literacy level. © Sebastian Palmer. 2nd place, series, LensCulture Exposure Awards 2015.
2. Lisene. Lisene currently works as a manicurist in an upmarket salon. Working 6 days a week she has been able to save enough money to buy 2 cows for her brother who lives in the countryside and looks after her child. One day she hopes to travel.

4. Snr Orivaldo. At the age of 83, Snr Orivaldo was made homeless by his son-in-law. He stands next to a modified dollar bill which aids in his “motivation”.

6. Francisca. A single mother, pregnant with her 6th child, Francisca finds strength in the Bible. She is currently attending school to obtain a high school diploma and wishes for the day when she will be reunited with her youngest child whom she “lost” to crack when he became an addict at the age of 12.

He has given up his home so that his daughter and grandchild have a better start to their lives.
